It was a success!! We put forth a great effort in Prayer and Perspiration and finished several great tasks to secure the house in Kaintiba for our family to move and live full time in this Gulf Province government station. We were able to book a charter flight from Goroka for the 9th of January. We set forth to purchase the supplies for the roof (about $2,500) in Lae. This was then shipped by road to Goroka to the Adventist Aviation Services on Saturday, January 7. This was then flown down to Kaintiba on January 9. After it was offloaded, the pilot continued to Kerema to fly us (Mark, Titus and another young man-Kevin) and about a ton of other supplies back to Kaintiba. The pilot was able to get a ton of coffee beans from there to Goroka to complete his round trip flight, so this reduced my overall cost to only $2,750 for the flight.

After arriving on this Monday (January 9) we carried the supplies to the house (others helping us). We organized/inventoried all the tools and supplies and found to be all there and no damage...a miracle! Tuesday was the first full day of work: installing two solid core entry doors, putting screens and glass louvers in the windows as well as putting in some new window sills. This and other minor interior repairs were completed throughout the rest of the week.

Sunday we had service there at the house, with a total of 14 persons in attendance! I was able to use a new set of Betty Lukins flannel-graph set sent to us from Word For The World Baptist ministries. We had got it all cut out as a family the week before to have it ready to take up with us to Kaintiba.

Monday (January 16) was the first day to begin removing the old roof and replacing it with the new "copper" roofing. We thank those of you that prayed for good weather for this project. It was all replaced by the end of Wednesday and last screws were put in place on Thursday. It would have been done in 2 days, but the rain came by 2:00pm everyday, so this slowed the overall progress. But we do thank God for HIS care for us and allowing it to be completed by Thursday morning. This included new gutter to collect rain water for our household water supply.

The next answer to prayer was the flight home. Because of PNG logistical problems, the only commercial airlines company (North Coast Aviation) was our way out "if" they came on their Friday flight and "if" they had room. The next flight with them would maybe be on Wednesday or the following Friday "if" they came and "if" they had room..... You get the picture. Well long story short they had "room" for two (Titus and Me), but not Kevin. Well, with some persuading of the pilot, we were able to squeeze Kevin in. The loading was at its MAX for this well worn aircraft, but a good head wind was what was a major factor for the pilot to allow Kevin to slip in, as also this is one of the steepest airstrips in PNG. This makes for good take-offs...in spite of it being one of the bumpiest airstrips in PNG! Using up 80% of the grass airstrip we were airborne and within 25 minutes we arrived back to Kerema and our family. The "road" back to Kerema is a 3 day WALK, so praise be to God for this wonderful flight, sustained by the hand of God. Those that know NCA aircraft understand what I am talking about.

We look to do this arrangement (Adventist Aviation Services) one more time to get some more building materials to the house and the whole family next time. We are shooting for the date of April 17, so please be in prayer about this. The supplies must be bought, shipped, flown and secured for the task at hand. The next 3 months will be busy doing these things as well our every day ministry labor here in the Gulf of Papua New Guinea. We covet your prayer as we continue to enlarge and expand the reach of the old, old Gospel Story. There are many yet to hear of all the good things our God hath done.

Mark Helzerman and Family

Mountain Anniversary Trip

What better way to celebrate your anniversary than to go to a remote area just the two of us….well sort of. We left on Monday, 29 August 2011. We first carried a load of cargo via Matt Allen's plane to Kaintiba (our future home). We then were able to go to Kanabea where Matt's airstrip is and then ride a 45 min. mule ride (Kawasaki mule that is, not the animal but the vehicle). We stayed two nights in the Allen honeymoon suite J. (Thanks to John and Selina Allen who didn't even know we were using their house while on furlough!) It was a refreshing time to be with the Matt Allen family! They are so hospitable! We are very grateful to them for allowing us to come and feeding us and providing for us for 2 days.

Besides the Allens fellowship, the most rewarding part of being there was the preacher boy, Jorim, who believes God wants him to help us in Kaintiba got married to Tabitha (not our daughter, just to clarify). It was on our anniversary! It was the first Church wedding in the bush area of Kotidanga. They were able to set an example of getting married God's way and the Lord worked it out for Mark and I to be there! AWESOME!

That was the more comfortable (from America's standards) part of the trip. The next part was exciting because we were working on our new home. We do not have running water or electricity, yet. It was challenging to fix food on an open fire. I had the blessing of having Jorim and Tabitha there to help me with this. We are not used to this but they are. One morning I sat for a half an hour trying to light a fire. L Jorim came and had it lit in a minute or less J. This white lady doesn't know everything that's for sure J.

I was telling Tabitha that we can learn from each other. I know I learned from her and hope she was able to learn from me. I was able to start working on my hamtai language learning. That is the language spoken in the area we are going. Mark did more work than me though as he put in a sink, tub and countertop, plus a door and sealed off another opening.

August 19

I flew into Atlanta ok and then onto Rochester. The flight actually arrived early (about 40 minutes), and I sure was glad to be home. Pastor and Mrs. Folk, along with Mrs. Tom Smith and Joshua, came for my arrival. But the greatest joy that I received was to see Christi my wife and all the children. I know many others were planning to come as well, but all the changes caused conflicts in their schedules. We are thankful for all of you that prayed for the trip and my safe return. Our God did many great things for me during this time in PNG and I am looking unto Him for greater things yet.

August 19

A man from this church in Brisbane took me to the airport. Upon arrival, I found the lines for Virgin Blue very long, causing me to get bumped to the 7:00 a.m. flight, one hour later than the original schedule. The flight was OK, but because of the delay, I missed my connecting flight to LA, California. Delta “refused” my boarding, and in exchange, put me on a flight with Qantas, along with a $600 voucher toward any future flights I may have with them (Delta).

The flight with Qantas was really nice and had the best food and the jet was the most comfortable. It is the largest jet (airbus A380) in the commercial world and the newest. This flight was a none-stop 13.5 hour flight and I was able to get a little bit of sleep.

Upon arrival into LA, California, I found out that the next flight had been canceled due to mechanical problems on the jet. This caused another change, so now I am headed to Rochester via Atlanta, Georgia. This flight is to leave at midnight and the time is 11:30 in the morning….what was I going to do for the next 12 hours in LA?! I remembered the last time I flew to PNG, we (Cliff Taylor and I) had a similar layover in LA and he had a contact there that came to the airport and entertained us for several hours. I was able to contact him (Mr. Carl Shriver) and he came out and picked me up and took me to his house. I was able to rest a little and get a shower. We had some really good fellowship and went to Spanish restaurant, also. He and his wife were a great blessing to me and it was good to see them again.

I arrived back at the airport with about 2 hours to spare because I really did not want to miss any more connections…I was already about 17 hours behind my original flight schedule. Detroit was the original way I was to go through to Rochester, but now I was going through Atlanta. Delta was able to secure an Alaska Airlines jet to help with their flight problem for this leg of the journey. She said she had done more checking but found nothing in regards to my application. I gave her Bro. John Grays contact information, as well as mine, in case she was able to find out anything. Something wrong is happening here, and I am not sure what it is. It may be corruption or just carelessness, but we must be in urgent prayer for this matter. I now realize it is my responsibility to be vigilant to see this through for those that have been faithfully supporting us to be in the field. There must be some creative ways to pursue this without causing too many hard feelings. Oh, Father, please give me wisdom to do my part in all of this.

The 2:05 p.m. flight to Brisbane, Australia left on time and I made it in around 5:30 p.m. The Grays picked me up at the airport and drove to Good Shepherd Baptist Church. After the prayer meeting I spent the (short) night with them, waking up at 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning to get to the airport.

August 17

I started making enquiries via the phone around 8:45 this morning. There is a Holiday Inn about a 15 minute walk away from the Lutheran Transit House where I have set up a make-shift office in the VIP room. After several phone calls, I was able to speak with a lady in the Labor Dept. Her name is Greta and she is willing to meet with me tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. when her office opens. She did some checking while I was on the phone with her, but she was not able to find anything in the computer system regarding my application. It is possible it was rejected, and no one was notified.

Since I was not able to go any further in my search today, I used my computer to get online and did some office work. This is a real nice Hotel and has pretty much all that a “high dollar” hotel would have. To use the wireless internet, they sell prepaid cards with certain amounts of MB usage. For what I needed it for, it worked OK.

August 16

Bro. Before we went, though, he took Bro. Matt and me to a supermarket to pick up some supplies (for Bro. Matt) for him to take back to his family on the return flight.

At the guest house I got settled in for my 2 night stay. I will be flying to Brisbane on Wednesday afternoon and plan to attend the Good Sheppard Baptist Church with the Grays in the evening. Until then, I am praying for the Lord to lead me in seeking out (by phone, at first) a person at the work permit office for an appointment to find out more about our submitted application. Bro. I preached from the text in II Corinthians 4:1-7 (a treasure in earthen vessels). We have this Treasure that the Glory of God can and will be manifested in us. As we are broken and out of the way, the light can shine forth as we see in the illustration of Gideon and the 300 that broke the pitchers and blew the trumpets. The light was in these earthen vessels, but the only way for the light to be seen was to break the pitchers.

After the 30 minute break the afternoon service started with a few songs and then I was once again to finish the time with a last message. I only gave a 10 minute challenge and then allowed those who wanted to, to ask me questions or make some comments/concerns in relation to the Helzerman family coming to work in Kaintiba (and K-town). This was a sweet time, as I and they were able to speak freely about the ministry Father has laid out for me there.

Bro. John Gray is still in Brisbane and I am in preparation to head back to the USA. Please pray for both John and Mary Gray about their health and the ministry that is at times overwhelming for them (esp. Bro. John).

August 14

We started out doing visits, but soon found that most everyone we were going to see were down at the “center square” for the Governors speech. When Bro. Jerry, Bro. Joshua, and I got up to where the event was we found several persons we had planned to meet up with. I was able to talk to a few of the high-school students that had accepted Christ as their Saviour last Saturday. About half of the high school students (boys and girls) were there in uniform for the singing of the National Anthem.

PNG time again: it was scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. but it was about 1:00 when the honored guest arrived and the speeches commenced. These guests were the crew and staff of a Mercy Ship (medical or hospital ship) from Australia. There were 15 different countries represented among them, including a married couple from Rode Island. I met them afterwards in passing, and when I told them where I was from, they told me that they had lived in Lima, New York for 3 years. This town is only about 25 miles from where we live.

I was able to meet the Governor as he came off the stage. Bro. Matt Allen had called me near the end of the ceremony, and I told him what was going on in K-town (as he calls it). Bro. Matt asked me to get a message to the Governor inviting him to a meeting they were having up in Koditanga. I wrote the message down and gave it to the Governor. In doing so, I was able to introduce myself and tell him what I was there for. Since he had much to do in entertaining his guest, he was not able to visit with me long, but asked to have an audience with me on Sunday afternoon. God has once again opened a door that I did not even know was there!

Pictures!

<img style="float: left; I enquired of the time of the start of their work day. The “office” is open at 8:30 a.m. and they are to start work at 8:45 a.m. While I waited, a man struck up a conversation with me. His name is Tamusi and when he is in town, he shares the same office with Mr. Marc Avai (the man I had come to talk to). By the time 9:00 a.m. came, Tamusi said he would go the Mr. Avai’s house to see what time he would be coming to the office. Tamusi came back in about 15 minutes and said he was not home. I found out later that he had gone down to the wharf to see his wife off. She had to go do her part for a funeral…the death of a close relative of hers.

I went back home without the letter, but went back in the early afternoon and found that he was at his house. As I mentioned before, the electric company had not been paid by the person in charge of paying the bills, so his office complex it without power to run his computer and printer. He was at the house typing out the speech the governor is going to give tomorrow. He took a minute to tell me about this and that he would make sure he completed my letter, even if it took him past closing time (4:06 p.m.).

I stopped off at the hospital to see if I could use the computer to send out an E-mail. Kaddie, a secretary for the nurses’ station uses a computer to do her work that has dial-up connection. It is as slow as a turtle, but if I have enough time it gets the job done.

Just as I was finishing, I got a call from Mr. Avai. He said he was finished with the letter! Only one hour after I had left his house, and now he is done. He told me he was in the office and would be there for another 20 minutes. It was now 4:00 in the afternoon: men’s prayer meeting. I quickly went to the church and told them of the answered prayer and asked if I could go and get the letter, for time was of the essence to conclude this answered prayer. Bro. Jerry rejoiced with me and sent me on my way while they commenced the prayer time.

Upon reaching the office at 4:15 p.m. Mr. Avia said he had looked once again at the letter I had submitted to him last week. He saw that I had stated in it that I was leaving on Monday, and realized the urgency of the matter. Setting aside the speech for the governor (he was 3 quarters through), he drafted the letter with his signature giving us the unconditional use of this old European built house for the Baptist Church in the “hinterlands of the province”. The letter states that he “recognizes the good works of the Baptist Mission” because of the example Matt Allen has been in the Gulf Province. Mr. Avai concludes his letter like this: “I trust that you [Mark Helzerman] will do greater works through the leadership of our God Almighty.” This is the first “house” Father has given to us. Now He will allow us to bring our family over to this “land of the unexpected” as we expect greater things that He will do through us.

The praying part of the prayer meeting was just about to start when I returned to the church building. Bro. Jerry allowed me to read it out loud to them all. They rejoiced with me again, for it was an answer to prayer. We concluded the prayer meeting and then went out to visit a few people. As we were walking along, I thought of the spiritual and physical blessings I have been given by Father on this journey. Although it has been a hard time of being away from the family, God has begun to fulfill His promises to me.

August 12

Not knowing the need to be persistent, I allowed a day of rest of inquiring about the letter of approval for the house in Kaintiba. Later in the day Brad wells called me to see if I had talked to Bro. John. Earlier (I think on Saturday) I had called Brad to seek his advise on the situation I am in with getting our work permits completed in Port Moresby. Brad is willing to help me, but wants to make sure he is not overstepping his bounds, since Bro. John submitted the original documentations. I see now I must be more persistent in all my dealings here in PNG. Tomorrow I have planned to go early to the government office and seek this letter; for it will mark the completion of one goal of God’s working here with me for the Baptist Mission in Kaintiba.

August 11

At 8:30 this morning, I was teaching in chapel again with the students at Charity Baptist Academy. The first thing we did was sing a few songs, including a psalm I had put to music a few years back. I plan to teach it more perfectly to them on Friday during the music class that has been given to me to teach. I then set out to preach a short message before they went off to school. This time my subject was Grace; 3 points:

Grace

  race

    ace

As you can see, all 3 of these words are within the word “grace”. Without the grace of God, we will never “ace” the “race” that is set before us.

Once again I preached at 5:00 p.m. to the faithful members at Charity Baptist Church. The men’s presence was down again. Please pray that God would do a working in the men here to commit their lives to the work of the ministry and to mature spiritually.

August 9

One more week to go here in Kerema and I am looking to see what Father has in store for me these last few days. There is so much I would like to get done and much work that needs to be done. I am seeking God’s face to ask Him for His wisdom in doing all that Father would have me to finish.

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you…” as I reiterate the words of our dear brother Paul to my wife. She has been the one I have missed the most. Bro. John Gray bought a Digicel phone (like a trac-phone?) and so we have been able to talk regularly except for the week I was in the mountains. There is no cell phone service there yet, so I did not even take the phone with me. Since we have had this form of communication, it has helped me to know how to pray for her and also comfort her in the times that she has needed it. It will be a sweet time of reuniting with her and the 7 precious children Father has given us to prepare for His workmanship. Christi has been strengthened by God to bear the burden and unusual grace through this time. I remember one comment she made to the children: “We are sharing daddy with others…” What a precious thought she conveyed to them and it has rung in my ears since she told me of it. I thank my God for blessing me with a Godly wife.

This morning (Monday) was another R.I. class with the government high school. Ilava and I went up again and the class is larger yet. We had 12 that came and they were more attentive this time. Maybe the worksheets I gave them to fill in and follow along with helped. The theme was the same as I had taught in the Christian School on Wednesday. It was more age appropriate, as they are closer to marriage and should be making both physical and spiritual preparation. It will be help to them some day (if not right now), as it was for me when I was their age. My notes were a combination of several mentors I have had in days gone by. God brought many things back to mind as I prepared the message.

This afternoon I combined the two classes that are working on learning the song “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” They are really picking up the song well and learning some of the music theory that corresponds with the words. It is a joy to me to teach this and also to lead the singing. This reminds me of the first time I led singing. Mr. John Green (my school principle during high school days) got laryngitis and during a chapel service asked me, of all the students, to come and take his place in leading the song “I am His and He is Mine”. This song has been dear to my heart ever since, and from this life changing event I fell in love with song leading.

August 8

I had the privilege to teach a Sunday school class again today. It was the same class as last Sunday. This gave me a chance to review with them what I taught them last week and then I taught a new lesson. One thing I miss being at my home church (Old Paths Bible Baptist Church) is the family school lesson. But what I have learned through them, I have been able to “teach others also”. Thank you pastors, for your care for the flock. Thanks be to all the teachers Father has given me over the years to bring me up in the way I should go (especially my parents). God sure has given me a rich heritage; a great responsibility rest upon my shoulders to help others carry this into the next generation.

In the main service, I again preached a message. The title Father gave me was taken right from the pages of Scripture: Behold the Man. This is the quote from Pilate. For sure our Saviour was THE MAN, and a man He was. Our Christ took upon Himself what I could not bear (He Bore It, He Wore It, He Tore It, He Made a Door for Me, He Was Heartsore for Me, He Laid up in Store for Me, He is Evermore for Me). All this while on Calvary…He is a man’s Man!!

After a short break, we assemble again for the afternoon service. I preached again, and then dismissed them to their homes. It was a busy day for me, but spiritually exhilarating. Who could ask for anything more? I am at home in this ministry and am excited to bring the family here to minister together (as a family) for the glory of God.

August 7

Prayer time with all those in leadership positions at Charity Baptist Church is always a blessing. They meet for prayer and then go out to make personal visits (some to the children in their classes and others encouraging those adults that have not been faithful).

I had made an appointment to meet a man before this prayer meeting (at 9:00a.m.) that had come into Kerema from Kaintiba. He was late, but came at the time we were going out. So we made him our first “visit”. His name is Api Mairea and he is the Community Health Worker in Kaintiba. He told me that he was in Kaintiba when I was there, but it did not work out for his schedule to talk with me. When he found out that I was still here in Kerema, he sent word to me that he wanted to talk with me about some things. These “things” were, as I soon found out, that there had been 2 meetings (in the Kaintiba area) with me and the “Baptist Church” as the subject.

The first was the Catholic Church (the leadership?) in Bema and the other was the Lutheran church in a village between Bema and Kaintiba. Api was only relaying the concerns they had to me about another “denomination” coming into the area. Their main concern was that the Baptist Church would take away from their “membership”. Of course I was not there to hear all of their discourse, but I conveyed to Api that many people in Kaintiba have expressed their appreciation of our coming and there are still many that are lost. I am concerned about the spiritual welfare of all that are in that area. Even if they have been saved (many still are not, even if they do go to “church” and have a “church membership”), they still have much growing to do in their Christian walk. I told Api that God commands us to preach the whole counsel of God and that is what the Baptist are known for. Mr. Api did not tell me what his thoughts were, but he said he would relay the message up to them.

Another thing I mentioned to Api was that Pastor Jeccania has already won two “debates” with the Lutherans on doctrinal issues in Hambuwinni. And also, he is already sending out men each week to Bema to preach and begin a Baptist church there. Jeccania has many family members there and has a burden to see them saved. He is one of them, so they (the Catholic and Lutherans) should invite him to their next “meeting” to address their concerns. We will be working together in our ministries and I have full confidence that his Bible knowledge and love for God will be manifested to all. Our hearts are knit together and his answers to them would correspond with anything I might say to them.

As I left off talking to Mr. Api and headed off with Joshua to make some visits, I mused about the promise God gave me about giving me “houses and lands…with persecutions.” Whenever we do something for Father, there will always be opposition. With this thought in mind, I rejoiced that we were on the right path, because of this fact. I do not joy in the trouble, but joy in the fruit it will bring for my God. Father is worthy for us to bear any persecution that we may face in our obedience to Him.

The next hour and half were exhilarating. Father allowed Joshua and me to enter the spiritual “delivery room” of the salvation of 9 souls. A group of High School students were in the building (dorm) we came to first. Some of them were from the same village that Joshua comes from. Joshua gave them all a John and Romans booklet (from Bearing Precious Seed) and began to show them the marked verses of God’s salvation plan. They listened intently and I think all except one raised their hands to be saved. Joshua separated them into 2 groups and he had me work with half of them. I started with 4 and then another came and I went over again the Gospel message, using the sinner on the cross with Jesus as my illustration. They seemed to grasp it completely, even though my English is a little different than theirs (Australian, England English). They all called upon God through Christ as I prayed aloud for them before Father. After they finished, I gave them some Scriptures concerning their growth and Spiritual wellbeing. I told them that many temptations will come their way, as also doubts, but to be of good cheer, we have the Scriptures to war against the tempter. Father has blessed us with the blessed Word of God that we may grow thereby. Praise the Lord for the salvation of these young men!

Saturday afternoon was a time of cooking and eating food with all these that are in leadership. I had asked Bro. John (who is currently in Brisbane Australia) if I could orchestrate this party. We had a great time of fellowship, all working together to make up the food (like pot-luck). We even put our money together to by a 16 liter box of ice cream (this is the only size that was available here) It is about 5 gallons and was 86 Kina (about $33), so that is almost 7 dollars a gallon of sweet vanilla ice cream. It sure was a nice treat and the first I have had since my time here in PNG. We played volley ball; oh, the time spent together was the sweetest and precious memories were made.

During this time I had them take the time to write on a piece of paper all the names of these workers (except their name). Beside each name I told them to think of one kind thought or word about that person. I then took up the papers and compiled the full list. The phrase “O come let us adore Him…” is repeated 3 times for a purpose. The reason is so each time it is sung, it can be (should be) expressed more and more emphatically.

At 4:00 p.m. this afternoon we (the men of the church…those who could come) met for prayer and then went out on “visitation”. We were able to meet up with some of the men of the church that have not been as faithful as they could be. They just need a little bit of encouragement and someone to show them someone cares for them. One of the cultural problems here in “the land of the unexpected” is that people are easily offended. It is a constant challenge to help them to see that God allows things to happen in our life to bring us closer to Father, not further away from Him.

August 5

Well, I heard verbal confirmation that the land/house was officially given to us. I preached in the chapel gathering of the school. My theme was about their preparation in seeking God’s face for who they should marry. It is common in PNG for the young man to pay a bride price for their wife. This was important to include thoughts along this, because in many cases they lack the character to pay it in a timely manner. The “Bride Price” shows the value of the wife. I think of the “bride price” that Christ paid for the Church. We sure must have been special to Christ for Him to lay down His life for us. Praise be to Father for His care for us.

My time here has been more profitable than I could have ever imagined. I do miss the family back in the USA. Father has given me the grace to overcome the sorrow of being away from them so long. To help the time seem to go quicker, I have tried to stay as busy as possible here. Sometimes it is hard to accomplish much when you are waiting on others to do their part (like waiting 2 years to get a work permit for a 3 year visa). Helping in the school, reading, studying, preaching, and public ministry all have been a part to keep busy…it helps pass the time. Thanks be to God that through this trip also, my relationship and devotion to Him and with Him has flourished.

The close of this day was preaching to those that came to the mid-week service. Bro. Jerry and I have been given oversight of the church here in K-town. Through it I am fulfilled and rejoice in the part Father has allowed me to play during this trip. I am beginning to see more clearly each day how important this trip has been in preparation for bringing our family over to PNG. So much has been learned and many new relations with the New Guineans is only part of it all.

August 3

Today I was able to submit my letter and Bino’s letter regarding the house in Kaintiba. Orisuru Avai is the man who is the official in this (Housing/Lands) office. He knows Matt Allen and he asked to give him his regards. My letter to Mr. Avai is as follows:

Dear Sir,

Please find enclosed a few pictures of the house referred to you by Bino Kikingai. It is our petition that you would allow us the use of this house indefinitely and unconditionally for the Baptist Mission and my family as we come to minister to the mountain people in Kaintiba. It has been abandoned for many years, and has fallen into disarray.

During the week of July 21-28 of 2010, I was able to see this house with Bino and with his permission swept the floors and cut the grass around the house. We did this to show the people we are in all sincerity willing to come for their sake with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are prepared to begin reconstruction and make all necessary repairs to make it a home for my family and a place of fellowship until other land is secured and a church is able to be built.
I will be returning to America (United States) on the 15th of August and hope to secure your signature for this petition before I go. The Pastor and men of Watitako Baptist Church (Hambuwinni area) are prepared to begin this in my absence. I am currently applying for work permit visas to bring my family here to work under the authority of Charity Baptist Church in Kerema with John Gray. I plan to return to Papua New Guinea as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter. I pray that this finds you in good health. May our God lead you in your decision and we anticipate your prompt reply.

Sincerely, and for His Glory,

Mark A. (religious instruction) class at 11:00 a.m. at the government High School. This was my first time and so I was not prepared to have 2 class sessions (45 minutes each) of time. I sure am glad that for the words of wisdom…”always be prepared.” Because I had another message with me, we covered 2 different subjects. Next week I must be prepared to teach better and more organized.

At 1:00 p.m. I began teaching the students at Charity Baptist Academy a song they will be doing for a Christmas drama. The song in “O Come All Ye Faithful” and I also incorporated some music theory that relating to the music for the song. I worked with the younger children separately in one class and then the older children in a second class for about 30 minutes each. We will continue this on Friday and then combine them next Monday.

August 1

It was a preaching day for me. Sister Helen had asked me to teach in her S.S. class (juniors) in the morning. So after this class, I was to preach in the morning service and after noon service. Through both of these times I gave a report to the church (Charity Baptist Church) about the trip in the mountains. The theme was “Open Doors” and of course I was able to preach not only of the open door God has given in Kaintiba, but the open Door to Heaven. The” Door was hung at Calvary, and it hinges on the cross.”

The day has quickly passed and I am fulfilled. Although I am drained emotionally and physically (and even spiritual to some degree), God had his way in my life this day. There are many in this church who have been praying for land and a church to be stated in Kaintiba, so they are rejoicing in how God is working.

July 31

All those in leadership or ministry meet at the church for prayer and visitation at 10:00 a.m. Bro. Jerry leads this and then we go out. I asked Bro. John Gray if I could put together a time of fellowship with them all. I announced to them my plan and we have scheduled this for next Saturday after visitation time. All are excited about it now and we have a week to plan it. The visiting time went well. Bro. Jerry and I had some really good Gospel witnesses in. Two different groups in particular sat and listened as Bro. Jerry went through the plan of salvation. During one of these, a man heard us talking and came in closer to listen. I saw him sit down nearby and noticed his attentiveness. I walk over to him and gave him a John and Romans booklet; that was what Bro. Jerry was reading from. He followed along and we talked to us further after.Saturday afternoon was a time of studying for Sunday’s preaching. Twice tomorrow I will be preaching and also during those times giving a report to Charity Baptist Church of the mountain trip and what God is doing in Kaintiba and Waititako Baptist Church.

July 30

After my morning walk and breakfast, I began working on an outline for my morning (11:00) lesson. Preaching… (Isa 58:1 ¶ Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins).

A. A warning

B. A gathering a people

C. Short sounds, Long sounds

D. Loud sounds

E. Joyful sounds *One place in the Bible where the trumpet and a light was used to defeat an enemy of God’s people… (Gideon and 300 men)

2. Our Returning Lord... (Re 4:1 ¶ After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. 1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.)

It was great enjoyment see them take the opportunity to blow my trumpet. Some have a real aptitude to play. Maybe someday I will have the opportunity to teach some students the trumpet. When I come back, I must bring some extra instruments for them to learn on. A few of the students have been learning the recorder and 2 girls are learning the clarinet. Sister Mary, before she had to go to Brisbane, was teaching them, but now they are left to manage without a teacher.Friday afternoons at 4:00 is the time for men’s prayer meeting and visitation. Only 3 men came to go out (including me). It has been hard to get the men here involved in the ministry of the church. Kerema has become hard to the gospel and strong family ties have also been a cause of the lack of interest. The church is full on Sundays, but many have not totally committed their lives to the will of Father. Pray that a reviving of God’s people will have an impact on Charity Baptist Church and Kerema town.

July 29

The airstrip, I found, is a great place to walk and meditate with Father. He is the One Who has allowed me to come to PNG. It is hard for me to be away so long from my family. Not because I want you to feel sorry for me, but that Christi (my wife) has so much responsibility with the family in my absence. My constant prayer is for God to give her special grace in this time and the children understanding of why I am away from them. It was an encouragement to be able to talk with my wife on the phone just an hour after I arrived back yesterday. It had been one week since I talked with her. There was so much catching up to do. The boys had been to camp and the music collage was done. I am missing so much of all the many exciting things our church is doing in the work of the Lord, but I am also participating in their evangelism around the world. When they are sleeping in the night, their work is continuing through me and many others as we labor in our daytime on the other side of the earth.Bro. John Gray called me before I went to bed and ask me to teach a few extra classes to the school children on Friday. He suggested teaching about the trumpet and then maybe a class teaching them singing/theory of music. It is a rare occasion that any child here in Kerema (and many other places here) would ever have the chance to learn any musical instrument. There are no teachers and no instruments here worthwhile to learn. A few Charismatic churches have drums to play and maybe a few guitars.

July 28

I arrived safely back to Kerema around 11:00 in the morning. After getting settled in, I found out that I was to preach in the evening service (5:00 p.m.). Bro. John Gray has flown (Tuesday) to Port Moresby on his way to Brisbane Australia for a doctor visit and also be with Sis. Mary Gray. He has been sick with typhoid and hepatitis (not sure which one) for over 3 months now. Of course, Mary has been with this cancer for 3 years now and her condition is worsening. It is in her lungs, esophagus, and her liver. This is now the last phase of my time here in PNG. I will be filling in for Bro. John Gray as he is away. I will not be doing all his work…that would take about 4 men. Preaching and local ministry is what I will be doing. During this time I am in prayer that I will begin to get a “feel” for my responsibilities upon returning to PNG.

Pictures

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501620983849231138" style="FLOAT: left; After taking care of some last minute business, we took my cargo up to the airstrip office building/shack. The cargo was more than when I came, and I had given some of mine away…why? So many things were given back to me and the Grays in Kerema. It was more than I wanted to pay for (extra cargo fee), but how could I refuse their kindness and their expression of love.

The airplane came and we said our last farewells. As we flew away from my “new home”, I wondered how long it would be before God would allow us to return with the whole family. Please pray for those that are doing the paperwork for our work permits and visas. Also pray God would supply all that is needed to accomplish all that has been mentioned. I have in my hand the letter from Bino, and the house is as good as ours. I praise God for his care and provision in this short “missions trip” in the mountains. Father far exceeded my expectations during my time here in Kaintiba. My mind goes back to His promise to me in Mark 10:29-30.

July 27, 2010

This morning I woke to hear pastor Jeccania and Jorum talking. I went out to join in the conversation. They had been talking in their “tak plas”. They told me they were talking about their concern of how I was going to be as a white American missionary. They were not overly concerned, because they had been with me for the last 5 days and had seen me eat their food (with them), sleep as they do, and had really become a part of them. They just were not sure if I was just doing it because I had to. Their other concern they had is would I except the way they had been doing things in the ministry of the people. Would I come in and make many changes which would breed insecurity and division? As the course of the conversation went, not even realizing all of these concerns, our hearts were knit with a strong bond of trust and confidence. I began communicating some of my thoughts and concerns and we found we all were on the same level of not only doctrinal standing, but overall care for the ministry. It was a joy for me to see this cloud of concern evaporate and their countenance glowed with renewed enthusiasm. It was as if as us 3 were inseparable to see a Baptist Church started, even today. We had a season of prayer and a time of rejoicing as we set out on the adventures of the day; just like 3 young school boys let out of school for the day!

Joe, one of the men in Kaintiba, has been letting me charge my video camera at his house whenever I need to charge it. Some of the people here have generators, but all is quite because there is no fuel here to run them. Joe has a few solar panels that charge 2 deep cell batteries (12 volt). The whole set/system cost him about $4,000. This would be a good investment for us to power our house with a clean/quite source of energy and low maintenance.

It was in our plans this morning to go up to the house and clean up around the property and sweep the floors. After getting my camera from Joe’s house we went up to the house and spent the morning and early afternoon working to clean up inside and outside. Odette let us use 3 bush knives to cut the grass and 2 bush style brooms to sweep the floors. There are pineapple plants, breadfruit trees, banana trees, and a few other food baring plants on the property. Oh what fun we had working together. The verse in the Bible “By, love, serve one another…” comes to mind. These people had come from another village to enter into my labor to help see another church birthed. Even Bino, the man who has the authority over the house and land, (who is not saved) had come to help cut the grass with his own bush knife. He told me he was going to write a letter to send with me back to Kerema to give to the authorities there to get the official signature for the land (and house) to be given to us.

We (Jeccania , Jorum, and I) rested and fellowshipped in the afternoon. I wrote down the things/tools that they would need to do repairs on the house in my absence. Bro. Matt Allen should be able to get the supplies in Lae and fly them in. The list included hammers, nails, hand saws, chisels, screwdrivers, shovels, rakes, and screen for the windows. I plan to send him the money for these things, and then Pastor Jeccania will supervise the project and secure the tools. My job will be to bring in the plumbing and put in the water tanks (rain water supplied). The roof will also need some attention (sealed or replaced). These are our plans currently.
It was important to stay up late tonight with our company, for it was our last night with them. In the course of the day we had invited some people to come over for tea, so a few took us up on our offer. We rehearsed again to them the great things had done for us during our stay. Father has allowed us to have a part in his working in the lives of these people. We have entered into the labors of others that have gone before us.

July 26, 2010

Today is a sorrowing day for the church. They are sending off one of their men and his wife to go to the Bible Institute in Wau. They are walking over the mountains to Aseki. From here they will hire a ride and ride PMV (public motor vehicle) down to Wau.

After they left, because so many came to see them off, I had the opportunity to give the church a devotional. I encouraged them to remember this couple was following God in their lives. They should allow God to turn their tears off sorrow into tears of joy. They can rejoice that God is working in their midst and preparing another preacher for the many mountain villages.

It was time for me to get ready to walk back to Kaintiba. We plan to walk the whole distance back (about 6 hours, with stops for resting). Pastor Jeccania and several others are going to go with me to help carry my things, plus the garden foods they gave to me to take back to Kerema (for the Grays). This party of travelers included 3 young ladies, 2 boys and a few young men. Another reason for them coming is to see this house that the people of Kaintiba are giving to the Baptist Mission.

Our trip was good and without incident. It is customary as you are walking the mountain trails to stop and in passing say “hello” (Awina=good morning, Kafainai=good afternoon) and to tell them where you are coming from and where you are going. This is done to those that you might know or perfect strangers. It definitely is a new experience, and takes time…but often leads to a time of witnessing to that person, even if you just tell them how good God is.

We arrived around supper time, so we bought some rice and Odette fixed a wonderful meal for us. I showed her and her family pictures and told of some of the things that happened while we were gone. Before we knew it, it was time to go to bed, and it sure was a welcome to me. I was tired from our weary journey….zzz.

July 25, 2010

Being the only white man for miles around, sometimes (almost always) is an amusement to all. Taking a bath in the river is without exception to this. About 30 young boys came down to see the “white-man” get his morning wash before church time. I am truly living among these people in a “glass house”. Everything I do and say is being noted by all who are near…and even told among those who are not.

Bro. Jorum taught/preached during the Sunday school time and I followed up in the morning preaching time. There was a time of break and then I preached again at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Jeccania’s wife has been serving us our meals during our stay. The menu is mostly the same every meal…rice, sweet potato, and boiled greens. Add a little salt and make some tea and the meal is complete.

Sometime during the day, I think right after the morning preaching time, a boy accepted Christ as his Saviour. Praise the Lord!! His name is Enok. Pray that he will continue to grow in the Lord each day of his life. I am thankful God allowed me to have a small part of his life and hope to be able in the future to minister to him from time to time during my visits to Waititako Baptist Church.

My heart had been getting so full of what God has been doing with me and to me that I had to sing some songs of praise in the congregation. I had asked if Bro. Jorum would interpret for me verse by verse. The first song was “My God and I” and the other song I sang was “Redeemed”. Both of these have been a part of my life as far back as I can remember. Each one holds a special place in my heart and relates my love and devotion to Father.

July 24, 2010

Saturday…we bade farewell to our host around 8:30 a.m., thankful for a good night’s sleep. The floor was hard, but I slept well. We washed in the big river just past Beima, and it was refreshing. The temperature is around 90 degrees as we walk along the trail, and the trail leads up most of the way. We finally arrived in Waititako at 1:00 p.m.

Oh, what joy the church family showed to me upon our arrival. Bro. Jorum was also a welcome sight, for this was his home area and was now home for a few days with me. He has taken a few days leave from Bible Institute to be my guide and interpreter. (Even those along the trail were excited to see a “White-Man”) The Church had prayed personally for me (that I would be able to come) on Wednesday and that evening word came to them that I was coming over on Saturday to be with them for Sunday services. They were so excited; many were shouting and praising God that their prayer had been answered so quickly! Now, upon our arrival, once again they were with tears of joy. What a sweet reception we received. They had made beautiful “necklaces” of flowers for Bro. Jorum and me.

At 2:00 p.m. I was asked to preach to the people, for the whole church was there for our arrival. It was a sweet time of reunion for those who were there the last time I came in 2007. I gave my testimony at length and told them what Unise had told me about praying for a missionary to come for 21 years. They rejoiced with me as I conveyed to them that was the time God began to prepare a missionary for these mountain people from their first day of praying. Our God works in wondrous ways. After preaching, I was drained both physically and emotionally. I tried to get a “power-nap”, but there were people coming and going. Is this what it was like for Christ while he was with us here on earth?

I played the trumpet in the evening as the children gathered around. When pastor Jeccania came back from visiting a person up somewhere on the mountain side, we assembled for a prayer meeting. After this, we ate and “storied” until almost 11:00 p.m. Finally, a season of sleep…zzzz.

July 23, 2010

Both Thursday and Friday morning we washed in the river that runs parallel for our daily “bath” after breakfast. On Fridays (today) and Mondays people come from different villages to bring fruit and other things to the small open market here in Kaintiba. At 10:00 a.m. Bro. Jorum and I preached at this “market”. This was new experience for many to have a “white-man” preach to them. Of course Jorum translated for me. I sang a song and he also translated the thoughts the song conveyed. The trumpet playing was also new for the hearing of several people. They listened fairly well, in spite of people coming and going. There were over 100 there in the sound of our voices.

Some “brothers” from Waititako Baptist Church came to meet up with us and help us to carry my 2 backpacks across the mountains. One man (Unise) told me people in Hambuwinni (this is the name of the area Waititako is) have been praying 21 years for a missionary to come to these mountains. As I thought on this, I realized that was when I was 13 years old…when God began to work in my heart to come to PNG. Oh, how my heart rejoiced in the thought that God began to answer their prayer then as He began to make a missionary for them through me. The sobering thought for me was, ‘could have I been here any earlier?’ Was there anything I could have done to get there any faster…did anyone die before I arrived that God wanted me to reach for Him?

We left Kaintiba in the afternoon with Pastor Jeccania (and those that came to help) and spent the night in Beima. Beimais the place of a Catholic church, but Pastor Jeccania has been sending two men each Sunday to preach there in an attempt to start a Baptist church. Several have been saved already, praise the Lord. Pastor Jeccania’s mothers land is there and so he has many relatives in the village. We stayed in the “home” of one of his “uncles”. We bought rice and some other food items to prepare our supper.

I was the first one to go to sleep after we ate. That 2.5 hour walk wore me out! Pastor taught those that were eating with us from the Bible. In the morning, before we left, I gave my testimony to them. I told them how God had worked in my life and saved my soul. God has been so good to me…I have no complaints.

July 22, 2010

Not very good sleep last night, but I woke fairly rested. Every sound in the village can be heard through the thin walls and open windows…including the termites chewing the “diwi” (wood) that the walls are made of. Odette served us breakfast again. While we were eating she told us she had arraigned for two local leaders in the community (Bino and Joe) to go with us through Kaintiba to look at land to use for the Baptist church building to be built on. She has also been looking after an old house (European built) that people have been disassembling for personal use. She said it would be a good house for us to fix up for my family to live in when we come.

Before we went we went to have a “look-about”, we three missionaries went down to the river to bathe. The water was low, so it was not too cold. This will be our washing place until we head over to Hambuwinni (Waititako) area for Sunday services. This is where the closest Baptist church is…about a 5 hour walk on a narrow pathway up and down…though valleys and on the sides of mountains.

We learned much about this area (Kaintiba) again as we “rounded”. Bino, the Council Secretary, took us up to the “State” (Government) house that was to be “condemned”. It had been built and used by Australian government workers back before PNG became an independent country (1975). It was built with good quality materials that were still 95% in good shape. The roof has protected the main structure of the house. I think with about $3,000, we could have it in livable shape…and another $3000 complete with running water. That would consist of collecting rain water and pumping it into a holding tank on the hill behind the house. From there the water would gravity feed/ be pumped into the house for the toilet, sinks, and shower. The rain gutters are still on the house! With all of this in mind it is not officially ours yet, so pray that God would bring His perfect will to pass concerning us securing this house for the Baptist Mission (as we call it until it is established complete as a church). God had given me a promise in His Word one of the first days in Port Moresby about given me “houses” here in PNG…could this be the first house(and the land with it)? (Mark 10:29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.)

Bino and Joe also showed us a few parcels of “state” land available to use. Eddie, the headmaster of the elementary school is still adamant against us securing the land near the school (the best piece of land). He says that it has been marked for the school to use, but according to the Lands Office, it is still available. He is the only one who does not want us to use it and he will probably give us trouble in the future if we are granted the land. Eddie is Catholic, but I am not sure if this is the reason for forbidding the Baptist Church from securing the land. It is in God’s Hand.
The remaining part of Thursday we rested, read, and refreshed ourselves in the Word in preparation for the weekend (walking across the mountain and preaching in Waititako). In the evening I played the trumpet at the airstrip, but only for about 15 minutes because of rain. Odette supplied us supper again before we went off to bed. Before we retired to the guest house, I gave a Bible lesson to her and her family. Jorum called Odette “mama”…culturally this is what you say to an older woman that takes care of you (like feeding you). This verse is beginning to fulfill itself to me. (…houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions…)

July 21, 2010

Bro. Matt came for Bro. Bill around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. On board the plan already were two persons I knew: Laura Lee Alford and Sarah Glover. It was good to see them again, even though it was a few minutes while we loaded Bro. Morrissey’s luggage. I had met both of them at Baptist Bible Translators Institute, Laura Lee being one of the teachers children. She had been in PNG for two months and she was returning home. So it was “farewell” to them all.

Before I flew up to the mountains, I was able to go one more time to the hospital to see Isaac and inquire about his wife. He told us that they had to go to Port Moresby to have the baby removed from his wife’s womb. I hope to find out of their well being when I return.

Our flight to Kaintiba was only about 20 minutes. It was not too comfortable on the airplane, but it would have been strange if it was. Upon my arrival, I was met by Bro. Jorim and Bro. Bluman (from Matt Allen’s church). Bro. Jorim was my interpreter the last time I came to PNG (2007) and he will be with me during my time up here in the mountains. They both had walked from Koditanga (about a day and a half [16 hours]) to join up with me. (If you fly it only takes about 10 minutes, but the cost is over 100 kina one way per person…this is a large amount of money for the mountain bush people.) As they told about their journey is was sweet to hear from them how God had provided 2 meals (apiece) for them from strangers along the mountain trail.

Bro. Jerry had sent me with a letter to a relative of his in Kaintiba. Her name is Odette and she has opened up an addition to her second “house.” A house in the bush is mainly for sleeping and other structures are built for cooking and eating in. A guest house would include a fire place in the middle of a large room where people sit and eat, “story”, and sleep. Odette and her adopted daughter Unise prepared a time of “tea” for us. We were served tea/coffee and kumu (boiled greens) koukou (sweet potato) and taro. It was very nourishing …God has already begun to answer our prayers concerning this trip:

1. a place to sleep 2. a meal (food) to eat.

Around 4:30 p.m. Bro. Jorum, Bro. Bluman, and I walked over to the airstrip and I played a few songs on my trumpet…the sound carried out across the valley. Many children began to gather around me. I showed them a picture of my family and told them their names in Pidgin. Every time I said a name they repeated it. We went over their names several times and it was like a game to them to remember and say the names as I pointed to their face. Some of the older children knew some English, so I began to ask them some questions in relation to the Bible. Because of previous “missionaries” (Catholic and Lutheran) many knew the answers and shouted them out. Just as I was beginning to relate why God had given us the Bible, we were called by our host that it was time to come over for the evening meal. It was getting dark any ways…I hope to do this again tomorrow.

Odette served us again. She has made it her ministry to minister to us even though she was raised (“baptized”) Catholic. It does not bother her that even her priest has talked to her that she should not entertain the Baptist. She tells those that are offended at her for doing this that God wants her to help all those that come in the name of the Lord…those that have come to preach the Bible. She realizes that we have come to help her people in both spiritual and physical aspects, so she will not turn us away. To God be the glory!!

July 20, 2010

Bro. Matt Allen flew in around 8:00 this morning…unexpectedly. He and sister Salina Allen (his mother) brought in two passengers. They were husband and a wife from their area of the mountains. The wife was great with child, and in the midst of the delivery (no medical assistance in the bush) the baby died in the womb. They had walked 2 hours to the road and Bro. John Allen drove 2 hours to get to them and 2 hours back to the airstrip where Bro. Matt brought them by air (20 minutes) to the closest hospital here at Kerema.

After breakfast, Bro. Bill and I went to the market to pick up some food for Bro. Isaac (the husband) and took it up to the hospital. After a short season of prayer with him, we came back to the church. We would have stayed longer and ministered to him, but he did not know English and we did not know enough Pidgin to hold a conversation. I plan to go later today to see him again with Jerry so we can minister to him in the trade language.
We were able to go back and see Bro. Isaac. His wife needed blood, so he had given some for her. I prayed with him again and Jerry talked to hip in Pidgin for a little while. We could not stay long because it was not visiting hours at the “house sick” (hospital).

The rest of the afternoon was a mixture of several things: final packing, teaching, and running. The last thing (running) Bro. Bill and I did together. This is the last full day together before he heads toward home, and I to the mountains. It has been a great blessing having him here. Thank you all who had a part in helping him so he was able to be here laboring together with us in the Lord. It will not be the same without him, for he was a real encouragement to me and many others.
This is the last info from me until I return from the mountains…God bless you all.

Bro. Bill has all our pictures up till now, so my wife should be able to send some on to those that are interested.

July 19, 2010

Sister Ilava, Jerry and I were on our way to go to the RI (religious instruction) class at the government high school around 11:00 in the morning. As we were walking along we saw some students passing us along the road. We inquired about them heading home and they said school had been let out early. Other than being their first day back for the second semester, we are not sure why they were sent home early. Although the power in town has been out (during the day) the last two days that would have not been a factor. The reason being they have no working lights in their school buildings.

Since our RI class was cancelled, I was able to assist Bro. Bill in his second class he taught in the morning. On days when there is no power, the students go home at noon. Some of the rooms are too dim to work in without the lights and it is hard on their eyes. A few solar panels would help with that problem, because the generator it too loud to run (and costly as well).

The afternoon was a time to do some prep work for my leaving on Wednesday. My suit case is almost packed and I will finish the rest tomorrow after we get some laundry done. I am allowed 16 Kilos and any more than that will be an extra fee. I have packed some food because I do not know what I will be eating for the next week. It is not enough for the whole week, only a few “meals.” It will be a time of asking God for my “daily bread.” How exciting to wait on his provisions.

July 18, 2010

Sunday was a preaching day for me and a teaching day for Bro. Bill Morrissey. During the Sunday-School time Bro. Bill taught in one of the children’s classes. In the morning service (after SS) Bro. John Gray had me preach while Bro. Bill was teaching a lesson to the Junior Church children.

His lesson was on “walking by faith and not by sight.” It included an obstacle course in which a child was blind-folded while another was to guide that one through a maze to a finish point. Without listening to the voice of God we will go the wrong way or get all tangled up in the affairs of this life. He showed that it is important to be attentive to God’s leading in our life and not go in our own way following our own senses.

God allowed be to bear my heart in a fervent message to the lost. There was at least one visitor from the invitations that went forth on Saturday. Without a doubt there were many lost there, but none came forward for salvation. (Many Christians came forward to pray for the lost…many of their family members and friends are still without God.) It was a planting and a watering message/time. It is God that will give the increase. There are many here who want to make the commitment, but the pull of family or the religion they were “born into” deter them from coming to the Saviour. Only God can bring to their attention their need for salvation and draw them to His side. May the Holy Spirit do a work in them that no man can do…even tonight as they go to sleep. Let them have a restless time as they consider the preaching that they heard today, O Father.

July 17, 2010

Saturday was another day making some visits and calling on specific persons to invite them to church on Sunday. It was for those in the church that were leaders in different ministries. We met for a time of prayer and then went out in groups of two. I was with Bro. Jerry and he allowed me to talk to several different people…he reiterated what I said in Pidgin (or “talk-place”) just to make sure they understood. My heart was so full and overflowing as the day passed us by in the labor of the Lord. Father went with us and He blessed us with many good conversations.

July 16, 2010

Today I started with the event of chasing a large pig off the property…it was 4:00 a.m.!!! All the neighborhood dogs had cornered a hefty sized sow and they were barking as the pig was snorting…so much noise. It was an all natural alarm clock!! Since I could not go back to sleep, I did some reading and studying. I also called my wife, Christi to see how things were going and to read the Proverb for the day with her. It has been a joy to call her about every other day. Bro. John Gray bought a cell phone for me to use during my stay here.

The phone company is called Digicel…cell phone usage has exploded in just a few short years. There are cell towers now in places the Gospel has not even been yet. The age of technology has overrun the preaching of God’s Word. Some of the phones even have access to the Web…and all that goes along with that. PNG is already a highly heathen land, and this is/has been already more of a detriment than a help. Instant messaging is not just a trouble we have in first world nations…it is touching the whole world now. It truly is not hard to comprehend the verse that says “and every eye shall see him” during the tribulation time. I know God does not need technology, but wouldn’t that be interesting if He streamed His terror into every hand held device at the time of His appearing. What a sight that would be to behold!

At 4:00 p.m. the men of the church (those that were not working) came together for a season of prayer. Afterwards, we went out and passed out tracts and made some visits. One brother that was with us (Paul) began conversing with some older men at the market…not in Pidgin, but in a local language. I finally recognized it as Kemea. This is the language/people group the Allen families are working with. This is also the language our family will learn during our time of ministry in Keintiba. Bro. Paul is helping me to learn a few phrases of greeting.

July 15, 2010

Another work day…Bro. Jerry and I trimmed some of the hydrangea bushes on the church property while Bro. Morrissey taught a morning class. He has been a real asset for the school this week. We were not sure what Bro. Gray had planned for Bro. Bill to do, so he has been scrambling to put object lessons together. He has done nine lesson (some the same)…this includes one RI (religious instruction) class. Bro. Gray has been gracious to keep him supplied with items to use with his lessons. Of course, Bro. Bill is knowledgeable in many aspects of science, so he has been drawing off the overflow of many years of teaching in his field.

In the afternoon of Thursday Bro. Morrissey and I went running on the beach. I walked some of the time so as not to overwork my knee. For some reason my left knee has been sore and somewhat inflamed. It started a few days after arriving in PNG. I think I may have stressed it when we ran in Brisbane, Australia. Please pray that it will not give me too much pain when I fly up to the mountains on the 21st of July. I plan to do much walking (over 7 hours one way) to one church in the Bush (jungle) of the Gulf Province.

July 14, 2010

I would like to thank all those who have helped in the expense to take this trip. It has also been a blessing having Bro. Bill Morrissey here. He has been really enjoying being here as well. Although we are so far away from are families, we are thankful for all of you that are supporting them in prayer and phone calls and even stopping in during the day to see if all is OK. My heart floods with joy when I hear of your kindness to them.
Today I taught/preached in chapel for the school. We brought out some things about the honey bee that we can apply to our lives. It was only a 20 minute lesson because I was teaching all of the ages, so I did not want to lose their attention.

In the afternoon I studied for the Evening Service. I preached around 5:30 p.m. for the Prayer Meeting. The thought God gave me was about having compassion. In the cold world around us it is easy to become cold and callused toward others. Father, make me to have compassion toward others that I may make a difference (Jude v. 22)

July 13, 2010

This morning we worked on putting some coconut leaves on one of the outside shelters. We ate our breakfast in the dim morning light again. The power is consistently off all day long, going off around 6:00 a.m. and coming back on around 6:00 p.m. In the mid-morning we went to the market and a few small stores to get some food items and candles. After we got back, Bro. Morrissey taught two separate classes some science lessons. He brought it around to apply a spiritual truth. Bro. John Gray has him busy this week in doing these lessons. It is very interesting to the children and they pay close attention.
I did some maintenance work today which included repairing a light fixture and two dining room chairs. Bro. Morrissey helped me on the chairs after he went with Bro. Jerry to get some more petrol. When we got the “fuel” the other day, we had invented a way to carry the container by two people by the means of a stave through the handle. It works great when two can bear the burden together.

We rested, read, and refreshed ourselves in the mid afternoon. After a while Bro. Jerry and I walked down to the ocean shore where the breeze was refreshingly cool. A group of about 30 children were playing a make-shift game of soccer on the beach, so I took the liberty to play with them. It was a novel treat for them to have a white American playing with/against them. Some of them were really good. The goal box was two sticks stuck in the sand, but only about a yard apart. Neither side scored while I played with them, but it was a lot of fun and hope to do it again soon. I pray the Lord will give me opportunity to use it as a way to get to their hearts and a time to preach to them of God’s great love. He would bestow it upon them if only they would put their faith in Him.

As I finish this up, it is after 9:30 p.m. We are going to sleep now. Those that read this later are actually getting up as we are going to sleep. So, I am praying for you all as you are facing a new day with new challenges. Father will keep you in His care…trust in him, for He doeth all things well.

July 11, 2010

Sunday was a preaching day for both Bro. Morrissey and I. It was a good service and the Lord met with us. I did not have peace preaching any other message I had prepared before, so I begged God to give me something fresh from Heaven. Father answered my prayer, and in just a few minutes this morning, He showed me a few things we can learn from NOAH. My time of preaching was only 30 minutes, but it was what my Lord wanted. (As a side note: Bro. Bill and I sang a duet right before I preached, and I played the trumpet during the offering time. Bro. gray has also been having me play the trumpet to let the people know it is time to gather together.)
We had given our testimonies in the Sunday-School time, and all of the classes were combined into one assembly. The morning service was over around 12:20 in the afternoon and the church family combined all the food they had brought to make a simple time of snack. So, we all had a short time of fellowship before the afternoon service. (We were able to pass out some “lolies” (candy) during this time, also.) Churches here in Kerema have early evening/afternoon services so the people can walk home before it gets dark. Many dangers are present along the road during the night time hours.

Bro. Bill brought forth a lesson in the afternoon preaching time. It was on the subject of—A Way that Seemeth Right. His object lesson was the use of a compass. Following a compass is like walking by faith. Trust the tool (the Bible), not your heart. The compass is affected by a magnetic field that cannot be seen or felt, but it is sure and reliable. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

After Miss. Ilave made us another wonderful meal (she has been our provider of wonderfully prepared meals during our stay here), we had a time of much needed rest. The heat here has been a steady 90-99 degree temperature (with high humidity) and it saps the energy out of us. We do not even have to move around and sweat flows from our brows. We have to drink a lot of water to keep from getting dehydrated. The power has been off during the day (for a “power-shed”), so the only cool room is warmer than outside. At night we finally get a reprieve as the power comes on and we can once again turn on the AC for a good night’s sleep. Our sleeping quarters are in Bro. John Gray’s office.

Later, on Sunday afternoon, Bro. Jerry went with us to go visit one of the school teachers. His name is Joshua, and he was a student when I was here in 2007. Bro. John had printed up some encouragement cards for the people at Charity Baptist Church to learn how to refresh each other with a few words of kindness. I took the time to write a note to Joshua, and we were on the way to deliver it. We were able to meet his uncle Max and talk to him as well. Max is not saved, so we started a friendship that hopefully will turn to his salvation. Pray that Joshua will be strong in the Lord and faithful in the midst of living among family that do not have a heart for God or spiritual things.

It has now been a week since we flew out of Rochester and already God has allowed it to bear fruit in my heart. Father has begun to Revive my heart and give me a deeper love and care for these New Guineans. Through it also, I have realized how I can grow as a Godly man, a father, and a husband to my wife Christi. This time away from my family and church has given me a new appreciation for what Father has given to me and also why He has given it. This reason I believe is to give us a sample and example of what Father wants to do here among these people.
The reading of Joshua Thompson’s book “As for God His Way Is Perfect” has been a great help to me. I started reading it after we got settled here in Kerema. I wept through many of the chapters. His life growing up was very similar to mine and could relate to much of the longing he had for being among those he loved so well. I will probably never experience the things he has gone through, but it was a joy to see haw Father has grown him and used him in so many ways. I pray Father will do the same for me as I am here in PNG, away from my loved ones and family. Thank you, Joshua Thompson for having a part in my growing time with God.

July 10, 2010

It is now Saturday. My dear friend Bro. Jerry Miri, who has been greatly helping out the Charity Baptist Church, went “rounding” with us. We had the business of getting “fuel” for Bro. John’s generator, but “storied” with (visited) some people along the way. The first place we stopped to get the petrol did not have any in stock, but we took the time to talk to them about the Lord. On the way to the second (and last) place to get the petrol, we stopped by an acquaintance of mine from the first time I came to PNG. Epi (as is his name) and I had ministered together and I wanted to encourage him in the Lord. We had a few minutes to fellowship, and then continued on.

Throughout the day we were able to “story” at about 6 houses, one who was Bro. Jerry’s cousin (Kelly). He is not saved, and is carrying many “heavies” (burdens) because of his life of sin. I fervently brought him the gospel once again, and Bro. bill talked with him too, about his soul. He listened well, but there were distractions that kept him from making any commitment to Christ. Please seek Gods face for his soul that he would be born again. Wallace, the pharmacist, is saved but is now being led astray by another religion. Pray that he would see the falsehood and come back to be among us at Charity.

July 9, 2010

Our night’s sleep was much better this past night…only one LOUD DOG episode and regular rooster crow every 3 minutes. I have been waking up around 3 or 4:00 a.m. every morning to spend quality time with the Father. It has been sweet…I wish I have been more diligent over the years to be more intimate with my Saviour.

We were to meet up with Bro. Matt Allen around 8:30 in the morning to fly to Kerema, Gulf Province. He was delayed about 2 hours because of weather conditions, so we “rounded” with Pastor Gerone for a bit. Then we stopped off at his house until the call came through that Bro. Matt was on his way. I was able to show a few video clips of people from Old Paths Bible Baptist Church singing. He was encouraged by their testimony and rejoiced to be a part of such a great Family.

After Bro. Matt arrived to the airport, we got things loaded up and made preparation to leave. While we waited, one of my one-talks (Tau) from the first time coming to PNG (1996) came to pick up the 2 passengers Bro. Matt had brought in on that leg of his flight. Tau is now a pastor in Port Moresby. It was an unexpected surprise to see him; we embraced and were able to visit for just a few minutes before we took off. He is married now and has 3 daughters. What a sweet time we had in reminiscing about the time we had first met…we both were unmarried back then.
The flight was without incident and I was able to once again visit (through the headset) with Bro. Matt Allen. He rounded with me on my last time to PNG (2007) and has been a great encouragement to me on this long journey to ministry in PNG.

Upon our arrival to Kerema, Bro. Bill and I were greeted by several of the students of Charity Baptist Academy and Bro. John Gray. A few teachers came too; one had been a student the last time I came and now is teaching in the school. They helped carry our bags down to the church and school property and conversed with us along the way. After a simple meal, we rested for a bit and then walked up to the open market with Ilave, Bro. John’s daughter. She had to get a ginger root for the evening meal she was preparing. The responsibility of much of the household work has fallen on her shoulders since Sis. Mary Gray has been in Brisbane for treatment of her cancer.

Another brother in the Lord is here now helping Bro. John in the work…Bro. Jerry and his wife Avoro. They now have one son. He was pastoring a bush church in the mountains not too far from where Bro. Matt Allen’s family and ministry are based. I anticipate getting to know him better and see his burden for his people. My father-in-law Cliff Taylor and I, along with Bro. Matt Allen had walked out to his bush church and preached/baptized a few/ministered to his congregation back in 2007. He has now turned the work over to another Bible school graduate. The work is growing and they have even now been inquiring about me and our family. Oh, Father, make it possible for us to come back quickly with the whole family and have a part in the growth of these thy people.

Before school was let out Bro. John had Bro. Bill and I introduce ourselves to all the school body. I hope to get to know them even better during the time God gives us here. I do not know their spiritual condition, but I know they are learning many good things and Godly things. Some of them live in homes where the parents do not uphold a good or Godly standard for them to follow, so the struggle in on in their live. The question is, who will they follow after?

July 8, 2010

Oh, what a night we endured. The 2 LOUD dog fights right outside and the party/domestic fight that lasted almost all night not far from the house was a reminder of why we came to PNG in the first place. We (as they, also) are just Gentile Dogs in need of a Saviour. O, how they need Christ to take away their sin and the guilt that is so deeply imbedded in their soul. The vises that give them a rush of pleasure is quickly gone and soon filled with overwhelming guilt, anger, and hatred.

Before Bro. Gerone came to take us to the bank, we were able to go over to a Holiday Inn to inquire about an internet connection. We got online and talked to our wives using Skype for a few minutes…it was a tearful but sweet time. The Lord has been sustaining us each and every day and hour that we are away from our families.

Bro. Gerone gave us a drive through the main part of the city of Port Moresby, even to the Parliament Building. It is uniquely built to represent their traditional meeting house (a Long House). It has beautiful artistic values, but represents a form of their paganism. We saw those that were somewhat wealthy-- to those that were in extreme poverty (Frog Town)…this is a small community that build their houses on “stilts” or like pylons (as those in the Bayous) right over the water’s edge of the PNG gulf.

July 7, 2010

Wednesday, we had a hardy breakfast at the Hotel and caught a ride into the International airport in Brisbane. One of the problems we faced by not being able to check our bags all the way into Port Moresby was that they only allowed a total of 20 Kilo’s for domestic flights. From the U.S. I had brought two 50# suitcases. (I had extra because of some tracts I was taking to PNG to distribute.) This totaled 46 Kilo’s, so we had to pay 15 Australian dollars per Kilo over the given amount. After paying over $300 U.S. dollars for excess baggage, we were able to complete the last flight into PNG.

The flight was about 3 hours long and with only an hour delay on departure…that is REALLY GOOD for the New Guineans. We soon were with Pastor Gerone Vere, a national pastor who met us at the terminal to take us to the Lutheran Guest House (a house hotel). (He had been at the airport for 2 hours waiting for us, because he was not aware of the delay.)

Bro. Bill and I freshened up and rested for a few hours before Pastor Gerone came back for us for the 6:00 evening service. He asked me to preach and I did so. He also allowed me to bring a song of deliverance on my trumpet (Redeemed)! What a time we had…even the prayer-time after the preaching was sweet. The day was quickly wearing away and so was our energy, but the kindred spirit we found between us kept us longer. The church body received us with kindness and brotherly care.

July 6, 2010

After we got settled into the Hotel (Best Western), Bro. Morrissey and I took a good run and exercised. We needed it too, because of all the hours of flying, rigor really set into our muscles and joints. When we got freshened up, Sis. Mary Gray came out and showed us some of the city of Brisbane, Australia. We walked down to the water ferry (taxi of the river) and took it down town. We took in a few sights, ate supper, and bought a few souvenirs. She (Mary) has been staying in Brisbane for treatments to fight her cancer. God has given her such a sweet spirit through it all. I have known the Grays personally for nearly 30 years… 22+ years of these they have been ministering in PNG. They have been a great influence and inspiration to Christi and me these many years.

The lack of sleep was soon catching up, so we headed back to the hotel around 7:30 p.m. By the time 9:00 p.m. came, Bro. Bill and I were fast asleep. I slept soundly until 3:30 a.m. (July 7) and woke up refreshed. Although it was early, what a wonderful time I had in devotion with the Lord in prayer and reading of His precious Word. It was continued as I took an early run/walk filled with mediation in the cool morning breeze and ‘while the dew was still on the roses’.

July 5-6, 2010

Yes, both of us were able to sleep quite a bit during the 15 hour flight to Sydney, Australia. We arrived safely to Sydney, with only one problem: Delta forgot to put one of my bags on the flight. We were in Australia and the bag was in LA, California. They had it scheduled for the next day to come in, but is still was not enough time to get it, even though they planned to ship it up to Brisbane, Australia. We had a 23 hour layover there. The good thing about it was most of the contents were for Sister Mary Gray (no, she is not a nun…she is a Baptist preachers wife) who is currently staying in Brisbane (She plans to pick it up at the airport on the 7th when it arrives.) The bad thing about it is… it had my preaching Bible in it. I do have a compact Bible with me still, so at the least we can improvise.

July 4, 2010

Rochester to Atlanta, GA was a great flight.
